Programme: Experiencing Chaoshan Winter Camp
Partner Institution: Shantou University
Period: December 24 - 30, 2024

The exchange program organized by Shantou University for HKU students to explore Chaozhou and Shantou culture was an eye-opening and enriching experience. It not only broadened my cultural horizons but also allowed me to form new friendships and gain a deeper understanding of a region that was previously unfamiliar to me.
One of the highlights of the program was the opportunity to meet new friends from Shantou University. These students were incredibly warm-hearted and welcoming. Through our interactions, I learned about their daily lives, their perspectives on education. We shared stories about our universities, our hobbies. These conversations transcended cultural differences and created a bond that made the entire experience more meaningful.

Our visits to the museums and various tourist spots were like stepping into a time capsule of Chaozhou and Shantou history. The museums were filled with artefacts that told the story of the region's development, its modern history. The intricate craftsmanship of the exhibits, whether it was the porcelain, embroidery, or woodcarvings, was a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the area. At the famous tourist spots, such as the temples and historical streets, I was struck by the unique architecture. The blend of traditional Chinese and local Chaozhou elements was evident in the red-brick buildings, the elaborate roof decorations, and the narrow, winding alleys.
Engaging in intangible cultural heritage activities was perhaps the most hands-on and memorable part of the program. I felt a sense of connection to the long-standing traditions of the region. These activities were not just about learning a skill but also about understanding the values and cultural significance behind them. For example, in Chaozhou tea-making, the elaborate rituals are not just for show but are a way to show respect to guests and to enjoy the simple pleasure of good tea in a harmonious setting.
Overall, this program was a wonderful opportunity that I will cherish. It has made me realize the importance of cross-cultural exchanges. It has broken down the barriers of ignorance and prejudice, replacing them with knowledge, respect, and friendship. I hope that more such programs will be organized in the future, allowing students from different regions to learn from each other and to build a more inclusive and understanding society.
