Programme: "Jiao Tong Global Virtual Classroom” Initiative Fall 2022

Partner Institution: Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Period: September 12 — November 24, 2022

During my immersive online study at Jiao Tong University for approximately one semester, I took two courses: Corporate Law and Foreign Trade Law, which provided unforgettable experiences. For example, I gained valuable knowledge from the professors who taught corporate law. These professors were highly academic and offered genuine insight into the subjects I was studying, responding to my questions and academic challenges. I was able to interact with my professors and classmates during class, and although we could not meet face-to-face, I developed a Chinese perspective that allowed me to better immerse myself in the captivating academic atmosphere of studying corporate law and foreign trade law. This experience also gave me a genuine glimpse into how research and academic discussions are conducted at Chinese universities.

Another noteworthy aspect of this course is the engaging online learning experience. It's somewhat unusual for teaching and learning to occur entirely online. Nevertheless, this does not compromise the quality of education, as the professors consistently create interactive methods for us to participate in live instruction. For instance, in the "Corporate Law" course, the professor routinely poses questions involving real-life corporate examples for analysis. Additionally, I often notice people actively participating in the Zoom chatbox, which positively encourages me to immerse myself in the course. In the "International Trade Law" class, thought-provoking case questions are presented to us before each session, and weekly assignments assess our understanding of previous chapters. I find this approach to be beneficial.

In conclusion, spending a semester at Shanghai Jiao Tong University has been an enriching and rewarding experience, and I wholeheartedly recommend this program to students at HKU.
