Programme: Heilongjiang Winter Experience Camp

In December 2023, I spent an incredible week in this beautiful snowy world where I also met some interesting people from different faculties. I took my first-ever breath in negative-degree weather on the airport grounds. It was astonishing. To be honest, as a local Hong Kong student who already considered 10-degree weather cold, I could not imagine how I could survive this week in a negative 20-degree environment. But I did, in the end, and I had a lot of fun as well, thanks to the warm welcome from the teachers and students at Heilongjiang University.
Even before arriving in Heilongjiang, the teachers had already sent us many reminders to prepare for the extreme cold weather. They designed and reserved various activities, including ice skating, ice skiing, different sites, and lots of local food, to present this beautiful icy city to us. I almost cried when I saw snow on the first night. Even though it was -20 degrees outside, we still had ice cream under the snow, which is a local tradition. It was quite amazing because the ice cream would not melt, and I could enjoy it as long as I wanted.
Despite getting a sore throat upon returning, I did not regret spending the last week of 2023 in Heilongjiang, as it was one of the most memorable trips that I had in 2023.
Thanks to the lectures in this programme, I understand more about the history of China’s development and also the relationship between China and the USA, Japan, and other countries. Together with what I have seen during the trip, including the use of e-payment, rental car services, etc., I feel like China has been developing a lot recently, and we should not view it as it was before.
