Programme: Summer Camp for Outstanding Students of UM Partner Universities 2024

Partner Institution: University of Macau

Period: July 22 - 26, 2024

Through this programme, I have gone beyond the university’s walls and deepened my understanding of the culture and people of Macau. The staff at the University of Macau were accommodating along every step of our journey, they answered every inquiry promptly and ensured all issues were addressed. By attending the seminars hosted by the university, I learned about the history behind delicious Macanese cuisine, the fascinating gaming and tourism industry, as well as the application and adaptation of International Law in Macau.

Meanwhile, the arranged tour at MGM Cotai was the most impressive schedule throughout the trip. We were welcomed by the MGM staff and briefed about the structure and vision of MGM by a manager in the HR department. Afterwards, professional docents guided us around the hotel, where they introduced breathtaking artworks. From Cai Gruo Wiang’s “Alchemist”, Xue Song’s “Eight Views of Macau” to imperial carpets from the Qing dynasty – the curation showcased captivating and thought-provoking works seamlessly integrated with MGM Cotai’s public spaces.

My goal of joining the UM Summer Camp for Outstanding Students was to experience a high level of cross-cultural exchange, now I am glad to report that this goal has been actualized. Students from 52 universities, ranging from universities in Mainland China to Mozambique participated in this exclusive programme. By being proactive and keeping an open mind, I have met so many sweet and talented souls. If I were given a map, it would be dotted with the names of new friends stretching from Wenzhou to New Zealand, then Malaysia to Guangdong. I got to introduce them to the culture of Hong Kong and Taiwan, and in return, they told me their customs and what made them love their home. From handmade keychains, regional snacks, to handwritten letters, I have received so much love from the people around me. After the programme, I even met up with my roommate from Nanjing University in Hong Kong and gave her a tour around HKU, explaining my university’s history.

Because of this programme, I had the opportunity to communicate with like-minded peers and broaden my horizons, building connections that fostered my global outlook.
