Programme: Cultural Memory Expedition: Unraveling the Mysteries of Bashu Symbols Workshop
Partner Institution: Sichuan University
Period: May 27 - June 3, 2024

The Cultural Memory Expedition to Sichuan was a truly transformative experience that has expanded my understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture and heritage in profound ways. From the moment I stepped off the plane in Chengdu, delayed and exhausted, the warm welcome and support from the host teachers and student leaders put me at ease and made me eager to dive into the adventure ahead.

The lectures at Sichuan University were eye-opening, providing fascinating insights into the intricate history and evolution of the Chinese writing system and regional dialects. Learning about the symbolic meaning and semiotic significance of Chinese characters gave me a newfound respect for the depth and complexity of this ancient language. The professors' enthusiasm and expert knowledge truly captivated me.
Exploring the iconic sites of Sichuan, from the colossal Leshan Giant Buddha to the spiritual serenity of Mount Emei, was a humbling and awe-inspiring experience. Standing in the presence of these architectural and natural marvels, I felt a deep connection to the generations of people who have revered and preserved these cultural treasures over the centuries. The Three Sages Temple, the Former Residence of the poet Du Fu, and the Sanxingdui Museum each offered a unique window into Sichuan's storied past.

Beyond the physical sites, the most meaningful and lasting aspect of this expedition has been the relationships I built with the local people - my fellow participants from Sichuan, Hong Kong, and Macau. Sharing meals, exchanging stories, and learning about each other's lives and perspectives has left an indelible mark. These connections have broadened my horizons and instilled in me a profound sense of the cultural unity and diversity that exists within the larger Chinese diaspora.
As I reflect on this remarkable journey, I am filled with a deep gratitude for the opportunity to immerse myself in the rich tapestry of Sichuan's cultural heritage. This expedition has left an indelible mark on my soul, inspiring me to continue exploring, learning, and fostering cross-cultural understanding.
