When I decided to participate in the event “The Mountain Yao on the Edge of the City – A Special Investigation into the Culture and History of the Northern Guangdong Yao Ethnic Group", I was filled with anticipation and excitement. On the journey from Hong Kong to Shaoguan, I envisioned the cultural exploration ahead, imagining the hidden cultural treasures waiting for me to discover in this land of Northern Guangdong.

Upon arriving in Shaoguan, the ancient charm of the city enveloped me. The campus of Shaoguan University was steeped in a rich academic atmosphere, providing a great environment for our study trip. Shaoguan, with its long history as the hometown of the "Mabaren" and the birthplace of Shixia culture, made me keenly aware of the profound cultural heritage here. Every inch of land seemed to carry historical memories, with stories of famous figures and the transmission of Zen culture, like stars dotting the cultural sky of Shaoguan, giving the city a unique and enchanting allure.

Entering the Ruyuan Mountain Yao Museum felt like stepping into an isolated world of Yao culture. The museum’s rich collection of Yao folk artifacts was overwhelming, vividly showcasing the lifestyle, religious beliefs, and artistic creativity of the Yao people. The hundred-meter-long embroidery scroll was particularly breathtaking, depicting the history of the Yao with intricate techniques and vibrant colors. From the heroic legends of the war god Panhu to the modern lives of the Yao people, each chapter displayed the inheritance and development of Yao culture. I immersed myself in the scroll, feeling the Yao people's reverence for their ancestors, their awe of nature, and their relentless pursuit of a better life. This was not just an artistic treasure but also the soul of Yao culture, elevating my understanding to a new level.

During the Yao cultural experience, I fully immersed myself, enjoying every moment of intimate contact with Yao culture. While learning Yao embroidery, I focused on the needle and thread in my hands, trying to imitate the skilled techniques of my Yao peers. Although I faced some difficulties along the way, their patient guidance helped me gradually master the skills and appreciate the patience, meticulousness, and love for life embodied in Yao embroidery. Making Yao embroidery sachets became my way of expressing respect for Yao culture; I carefully selected each silk thread and thoughtfully designed the patterns, hoping to incorporate elements of Yao culture into them. Participating in the bamboo pole dance and Yao dance performances, I felt the enthusiasm and vitality of Yao culture. The cheerful rhythm moved my body, and I laughed and interacted with my classmates, experiencing the unique charm of Yao culture, as if I had become a part of it.

The time spent with students from mainland China and other Hong Kong and Macao classmates was the most valuable treasure of this study trip. We freely shared our understandings and insights about Yao culture during group discussions. The in-depth explanations from mainland classmates enriched my understanding of this land, broadening my perspective with their wealth of knowledge and unique insights. The Hong Kong and Macao classmates added new sparks to the discussion with their different perspectives and ways of thinking. Through our exchanges, we learned from and inspired each other, jointly exploring the mysteries of Yao culture. This cross-regional communication not only strengthened our friendships but also deepened my appreciation for the diversity and inclusivity of culture. Although we came from different places, our shared passion for culture united our hearts more closely.

This Guangdong study activity was a comprehensive growth and transformation for me. I gained a deeper understanding of the rich connotations of Yao culture and felt the profound depth of Chinese culture. Through communication and collaboration with classmates from different regions, I honed my communication skills and team spirit. Upon returning to Hong Kong, I was eager to share this valuable experience with more people, allowing them to appreciate the charm of Northern Guangdong culture. I believe that every sharing is a seed of cultural dissemination, taking root and sprouting in the hearts of many. This study trip will forever be etched in my memory, inspiring me to continuously explore the mysteries of culture and actively participate in cultural exchange activities, contributing my part to promote cultural integration between Hong Kong, Macao, and the mainland.
