Programme: Chaoshan Culture Camp

Partner Institution: Shantou University

Period: December 24 - 31, 2023

The entire learning camp revolves around Chaoshan traditional culture. Through the study of theoretical knowledge, we understand the architectural forms, language features, and historical origins. In the practical activities, we apply the true knowledge, discover the beauty of the tide embroidery technique of dragon and phoenix, taste the aroma of kung fu tea, and see the embodiment of the Chaoshan people's expectations for a better life in the lanterns.

The most significant thing I gained from the whole learning camp is that I saw Chaoshan traditional culture being well preserved and passed on. First is the material cultural heritage. When I visited ancient cities and villages, I found that these types of settlements, as well as the "localism" we often refer to when discussing architecture and art, were well protected. For example, the form of architecture, the interactive relationship between architecture and residents, and the relationship between traditional folk houses and modern buildings are all well preserved.

There are also many similar cases in intangible culture, such as Chaozhou opera, Chaoshan dialect, Chaozhou embroidery, etc. This culture, which needs to be passed on by word of mouth and taught by example, has been preserved through generations of craftsmen.

Lastly, it is the development of Chaoshan culture. I find that there are many points worth learning from the dissemination of traditional essence and the development of new innovations in Chaoshan culture. It can be seen in a cup of tide tea, such as a national tide emerging drink, that not only incorporates the innovation and characteristics of kung fu tea but also integrates the design of the hand-pulled pot into the cup body.

In conclusion, I would like to thank the teachers for arranging the entire trip, allowing us to deeply experience Chaoshan life, learn Chaoshan culture, and combine theory with practice. I also appreciate the company of the students during these days. The communication with the students has been a fruitful part for me, generating numerous ideas on learning planning and life development.
