Programme: Dali Go! Competition

Partner Institution: Fudan University

Period: December 25 - 31, 2023

Participating in the Dali Go! Competition proved to be a life-altering experience that broadened my cultural horizons. Immersing myself in the Bai people's culture for a week, alongside teammates from various regions and universities in China, provided a platform for personal, academic, and social growth.

During our time there, we had the opportunity to explore breathtaking landscapes, vibrant night markets, and serene towns. We delved into the rich tapestry of ethnic minority cultures and indulged in a diverse array of food, including delicacies like flower cake, flower milk, and mushroom hotpot, as well as unconventional treats like fried bugs. Our team also dedicated ourselves to a project centered around devising effective marketing strategies for tourism in DaLi. This involved extensive research on the local culture, lifestyle, history, and tourism landscape, discussing these in an all-night session with my teammate.

Beyond our project commitments, I immersed myself in the region's rich history and vibrant nightlife. Each night presented a thrilling opportunity for adventure, whether it involved browsing shops offering unique souvenirs or savoring the delights of local cuisine. These experiences not only deepened my understanding of DaLi's heritage but also forged lifelong friendships with fellow exchange students from different parts of China.

Adapting to the local environment presented both challenges and rewards. The high altitude and strong winds initially posed obstacles, with many of us falling ill and experiencing altitude sickness. Nevertheless, the awe-inspiring beauty of DaLi's landscapes made it all worthwhile. We conquered Cang Shan in the morning, marveling at the panoramic views, and ventured to the enchanting Erhai Lake. In the evenings, we explored bustling markets, with the starry night sky seemingly within arm's reach.

One of the most profound aspects of my exchange programme was the time spent with the locals. Our guide, Ms. Li, nurtured us, imparting captivating stories and insights into the history of DaLi and the Bai people. Before my visit, I had scant knowledge of this city, and my perception of it was shaped by media portrayals suggesting underdevelopment in Yunnan. However, this experience shattered those preconceived notions, offering a firsthand understanding of the world that extended beyond textbooks.

Returning home was bittersweet, as bidding farewell to newfound friends was challenging. Nevertheless, the impact of my exchange programme continues to shape my life. It exposed me to a slower-paced lifestyle that contrasts with the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong. I now appreciate the diverse ways of living, from the sustainable and organic practices embraced by the locals to the carefree and spontaneous approach to life adopted by wandering travelers. This experience has ignited a profound passion for cultural exchange and inspired me to seek future opportunities to bridge the divide between different cultures.

In conclusion, my exchange programme experience was a transformative journey that expanded my worldview, facilitated personal growth, and nurtured lifelong connections. It instilled within me a deep appreciation for diversity, cultural understanding, and the profound impact of human connections. I will forever cherish the invaluable lessons learned and the memories created during this life-altering adventure.
